Sheep Sharing Give-Away

This morning I wondered why the sheep prefer to camp under the stars along the fence, right up by our house, when they have a perfectly good house of their own at the edge of the paddock. Perhaps they like having a front row seat for the daily theater of humans. The show starts when I raise my bedroom shade just before sunup. Their eyes are instantly on me. They follow my movement through the house, downstairs to the kitchen window. We watch each other while I brew coffee. It's a daily ritual – one of many in the work

Winter Morning

A fresh dusting of snow overnight speaks the undeniable truth: winter is here to stay. A flock of sharp appetites greeted me at the gate this morning. I am grateful for not having to shovel snow today – and for heated water buckets. Snow shovels are on stand-by. Now I need to get serious and put the plow on my truck! Come back tomorrow for an important announcement about Sheep Shares 2011. Until then, stay warm!

Summer Shares

Returning from a blog hiatus and a trip to spend some time with my family and friends on the seacoast. We celebrated a very special birthday. My niece, Lilly, turned 1. And okay, I'm a little biased, but I'm telling you she is the cutest, happiest little girl in the world. It is such good fun being an Auntie.  Going on vacation is an amazing amount of work. List making, shopping, packing, instructions for the house sitter, instructions for the farm – it almost doesn't feel worth all the effort until you actually get away for a few days. I

Sheep Shares Lamb Visit

The lambs had company on Sunday. We got lucky with a picture-perfect day for our Sheep Shares Lamb Visit. The flock was on their best behavior. Mostly. They lampeded for guests before fanning out to graze in the field. Holly and Mike gave a farm tour. The bottle lambs scampered right over and hung out with us for the afternoon. Helena stole someone's plate of grapes and carrots. Crackerjack eyed the refreshment table but minded his manners.  Mistral peed on the picnic blanket  .  . . yet still managed to win everyone's heart . . .  while amusing us with

Sheep Shares Lamb Visit part two

More scenes from the day: Georgia and Mistral remained center stage throughout the afternoon. Even when the rest of the flock drifted back toward the barn and we settled down to knitting in the shade, they wandered from guest to guest. Mistral inspected the contents of every knitter's bag (for contraband bottles?),  - and almost frogged someone's w.i.p.! Georgia just wanted to be spoiled. She was not disappointed.      Like a pair of toddlers, into everything!!!   When it was time for a group shot Georgia took her second nap of the day in the arms of her new best

Sheep Shares Members Lamb Visit Open House – Rain Date

What a tough call. I waited right up until 9 this morning to decide to postpone our Sheep Shares Members Lamb Visit Open House, although the outlook was bleak from the start. After waking at 6 a.m., sipping coffee to the sound of a torrential downpour and comparing the local news to the weather channel, I gathered we were in for a rocky day, weather-wise. By 8 there were rumbles of thunder. The hour by hour forecast on the Weather Channel showed scattered storms throughout the day. After the severity of the storm just over a week ago, I

Video – Morning in the Garden with Lambs – And Word about Sheep Shares

For you:  Another morning with lambs in the garden. In yesterday's post I was mistaken about the timing of the school bus – you'll see it in this post. You can hear the bus rumbling down the road from 1/4 mile away. When it swooshes by, the lambs go flying. Same for motorcycles and tractors. Fortunately, we don't see much road traffic here. The slow-moving chunky little lamb tagging along after the others have taken off is Zap. Poor little guy is always getting left in the dust. His mom, Thalia, is great about staying near his side. You'll also

Evening Chores!

Some scenes from this evening: three frantic bottle lambs at dinner time! I promise, this is the last post about the bottle lambs for a while, but couldn't resist sharing these pics. After playing in the yard all day, they are crazy hungry. Mistral wanted to skip the bottle and eat the powder milk replacer directly from the sack. Georgia and Garamond lost patience and demanded counter service. Dinner is served. Storming into the house is getting to be routine for this group – it's so funny to call them in from the yard and have them come flying through

New Arrivals – Giveaway!

Lamb-o-rama Update: Still no new arrivals of the wooly four-legged sort just yet. The photo below is a close-up of my neighbor Barbara Gig's little cutie. But while we're waiting,  I'm now kicking off a month of giveaways celebrating new arrivals of all sorts.   This week I'm celebrating the arrival of spring shares for Sheep Shares! Fresh, crisp skeins of our hot-off-the-sheep Cormo wool lusciously blended with alpaca from a local farm and bombyx silk.     And a new arrival of another sort. A good friend, Gail Callahan, aka the Kangaroo Dyer, is celebrating the launch of her new
