Lambitious

The lambs are feeling more "lambitious". Scaling straw bales is their newest challenge. Each morning while we're cleaning the barn they compete to see who's king of the straw bale. After breakfast, we send everyone out into the pasture for the day, except for the triplets, and Mistral who likes to hang out with the triplets. And Thalia and little Zap, who is so much smaller than the rest and still catching on to life in the barn. The pack of lambs tags along with Crackerjack in the field. He's the lamb nanny. Lunch with Mistral – Video

Here's an update on Mistral. As you can see from today's video, she's getting leggy and also filling out quite a bit. In the barn, she's fitting in well with the other lambs, racing and exploring the pasture. I saw her sampling hay at dinnertime yesterday, a very good sign that she's on the right path. It's not unusual for bottle lambs to be very keyed in to people but it's been years since I've had a lamb this imprinted on me. I think spending her first night in my bed may have had something to do with it. She

We're all resting after a long journey . . . . . . and breathing a huge sigh of relief this morning. Our last lamb of the season arrived yesterday evening. Thalia delivered the sleepy ram lamb pictured above just as I was heading to the barn for Mistral's bedtime bottle feeding. It was really considerate of her to lamb before I went to bed for the night. Since he is our grand finale of lambing 2010, I've named him Zapfino – "Zap" for short. A few scenes from my morning: I've named Helena's black ewe lamb "Mistral" (one of yesterday's suggestions, thank you!). She spent her 4th night indoors, after making new friends in the barn yesterday. Following her midnight bottle feeding I brought her back to the studio with me as I did not want to return to the barn for the 2 & 4 a.m. feedings. Hello everyone. Thanks for your encouraging words and thoughts for Helena's little black ewe lamb. She spent her second night in the bedroom she woke up hungry and sucked done a solid five ounces. After following me around the house, piddling and pooping on just about every rug, I decided it was time for her to move back to the barn. Found this lovely raft of Cormo lambs in the center pen today. All Teaberry lambs – big eyes, pink noses.They've begun to fill out, loosing that loose-skinned newborn look. We've got them ear tagged so we can keep track of who belongs to whom. With so many mothers and lambs bouncing around the mixing pen it's pretty hard to tell them apart. The lambs have started forming their own little pack, often sleeping together in piles while the mothers are at the feeder. I'll be sending them out to romp in the yard soon, maybe even early this week

The lambs are loving their new creep pen. I thought you might like to see them having fun in their new giant play pen, complete with toys. And food. In the background a lamb is entering through a slot the creep panel from the adjacent pen where we keep the mothers. I love watching them explore for the first time. At first they're hesitant and spooked by a new place. And then they let loose and start bouncing around. Party time. The green ball is for the boys to practice head butting. Morning Chores!

It's not every day that starts with a lamb looking up your nightie. Holly was here early for morning chores. I'm suppose to get a little more rest this way. But when I can hear the sounds of morning chores over the baby monitor – feeding sheep and cleaning pens – it's hard to stay in bed even though I could use the rest. I went over in my nightie just to say hi and see if anything was cooking. But then I started seeing all the little tasks we could get done really quickly if we did them together.
