After the Storm

We all survived Hurricane Irene. Sheep, llamas, goat, people – all fine here. There are even pears left on the tree. We were very lucky. Here are a few shots of the farm yesterday afternoon: Before the storm we had taken measures to keep the sheep well away from risky, flood-prone closest to the brook. They weathered the storm just fine. Oddly enough, they preferred standing outside in the rain, heads pointed into the wind making me really wonder what goes on inside their wooly hears. I supposefFor them last Sunday was just another very windy, rainy day. That was

Llama Lure

Before lambing season sweeps in and captures everyone's attention, I thought you might like a visit from some of our non-gestating critters. Sol llama lives with last year's lambs. Each day we work with him on the same basic lesson: people are ok. It's taking lots of patience and incentives. At first he wouldn't come near us, even though a grain pan is mighty tempting. It drove the lambs nuts that he didn't want it and they couldn't have it. They still swarm around my legs like agitated bees. But now he easily comes within arm's length and sometimes even

Llama Llove?

Could there be romance in the air at the farm? Sometimes I wonder if there's flirtation between Caitlyn and Sol.  She loves gazing in his direction as he struts around the paddock. He seems to pose just for her.  She bats her eyes.   Ok, really, this llama rellationship is strictly pllatonic. Although they would make a handsome couple. Happy hearts day to all!!   And I have loved reading your comments on my Winter's Waning GiveAway; it's encouraging to hear that spring is further along in other parts. Milder weather at the farm is warming everyone's hearts here today.

Sol Llama Update

Isn't he a beauty? Sol, our rescue llama, loves his sheep but people can't get within 15 feet of him – that's his comfort zone.  I wonder if he'll always think of us as scary. We've caught him a few times, just for the exercise of catching him and letting him know we won't hurt him. It's less stressful if we do it in the barn by crowding him in a pen with the sheep. If there's no where to run, he knows it and somehow that's less frightening. Like the sheep, it's the chasing part that's scary. So we

Snow Llama

Woke up to a frosted farm today. Very pretty for morning chores. Sol, our new llama, and the lambs dined al fresco on clean snow. Sol studies everything. Nothing escapes his attention: the Belties (Belted Galloway cattle) next door, tractors, mail truck, UPS deliveries. Today he'll get to watch Mike shovel snow. He just takes it all in. The straw delivery truck earlier this week proved spooky. Sol stood in the paddock some distance from the barn and watched with his ears cocked forward while the bales were tossed off the truck. The lambs clustered around his legs. He is

Holiday Weekend

A few scenes from Christmas day at the farm. Hope everyone had a wonderful holiday. We're getting hammered tonight with the first blizzard of the year. Tomorrow will be busy, plowing, shoveling, snow blowing. But for tonight, I'm just enjoying the storm as the holiday weekend winds down, crossing my fingers that we don't lose power.

Sol Llama

Animal rescue requires a leap of faith. The caregivers at the Animal Rescue League shelter an animal that's been abandoned or neglected, in hope that someone will give it a home. Adopters take on responsibility for the well-being of an animal whose complete history is often obscure. You sign a contract and hope for the best. We 've adopted our new llama following a gut instinct. His behavior is cautious and understandably so given the hand he's been dealt. There isn't the slightest sign of aggression. We know that he was brought to the shelter in September after escaping from his

New Arrival on the Winter Solstice!

Last week Mike and I took a little detour on the way to visit my cardiologist in Boston. I had just received an email from Lisa Lagos, the director of the Animal Rescue League of Boston's large animal facility in Dedham. A 7-year-old llama who has also had a rough year was seeking a home. We stopped by to meet him. Honestly, we had no plans to adopt anything right now. But that trip to the Rescue barn in Dedham on Thursday has brought the newest member to our flock today, in time to celebrate the Solstice. I promise to

Llama Drama

What a wild way to end the week. I was in Boston Friday for an appointment with my cardiologist, back in time for dinner with good friends last night. This morning I was headed east again (attending a lovely memorial service for my friend's mom). Having spent two days in the car bouncing back and forth on the Mass. Turnpike, I was looking forward to a little quiet time today. A chance to catch my breath, catch up on correspondence, write holiday cards and maybe bake some cookies. But that all went out the window this afternoon just as I

Lambs – Out to Pasture

It takes a llama to get the lambs going in the right direction. Just a quick post – I thought you'd like to see how we get them out to pasture in the morning.  WE LOVE CRACKERJACK!!           copyright 2010. Barbara Parry. All rights reserved.
